Contract Opportunity – Production Manager

Morpheus Theatre is a Calgary-based community theatre company entering our 25th season.  We produce four main productions each year at the Pumphouse Theatre, run a G&S Junior Theatre School program and various educational workshops for adults throughout the season.  Read more about us and our upcoming season at www.morpheustheatre.ca.

 

Morpheus Theatre is seeking a candidate with strong project management and technical theatre knowledge to fill the part-time position of Production Manager. This contract runs from July 23, 2019 to May 31, 2020 with the potential to renew.  The ideal candidate will have a desire to remain with the program for a few years.

It is expected that work will be primarily concentrated around our producing activities, with some planning work throughout the season. The Production Manager is required to attend all production meetings for the 4 main productions, which are typically scheduled bi-weekly, and be available for load-in to the theatre, throughout tech week and the performance run, as needed, and strike.  Tech weeks begin September 22, 2019, December 1, 2019, January 26, 2020, April 26, 2020, and May 3, 2020.

 

The contract fee is set at $4,000; payable $1,000 per main production.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Be able to work both independently and in close collaboration on tasks
  • Be able to problem-solve calmly and effectively, including when under pressure
  • Be a strong communicator, both in person and in writing
  • Have experience with how to create a budget and track expenses
  • Have knowledge of theatrical sound and lighting equipment
  • Be able to participate ‘hands on’ in set ups and strikes
  • Previous experience as a theatre technical director, production manager or running a venue is an asset

 

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Production Management and technical support for:
    • Morpheus Theatre’s 4 main productions
    • G&S Junior Theatre School performances (May 2020)
    • Assistance to Morpheus’ one-act play
  • Reporting to the Artistic Director, ensure issues are escalated appropriately
  • Attend and chair all production meetings
  • Liaise between directors, stage managers and designers throughout rehearsals, runs, tech, and performances
  • Sourcing, renting and purchasing materials as necessary for the productions
  • Schedule and run tech days in the theatre space, ensuring there is adequate volunteers for light hangs and set load-in and strike
  • Liaising with the venue
  • Ensuring that the productions are aware of and complying to the requirements of the rental agreement.
  • Providing technical assistance for productions as required
  • Available on an on-call basis between load-in and strike to troubleshoot technical problems that may arise during the run of a show

June 8 Masks Inside and Out with Steve Jarand – We all hide behind different versions of ourselves. The roles we play are temporary masks we wear. These masks help us navigate through our lives, yet revealing what lies underneath may feel too personal. But if we wear a real mask and play the game of disguise, honest expression turns our self-consciousness into an adventure. Showing something genuine from inside feels like a universal truth. It is a joy for us, and a gift to the audience. Fabulous Value!

June 9, 2:00 – 4:00 – Annual Appreciation BBQ – Join us for an afternoon of FREE BBQ, door prizes, socializing, and show reminiscing all hosted by our wonderful Board of Directors!  Show mementos will be available for pick up (cast photos, etc).  There will also be information on our new season, and how to get involved. June 22, 23Casino Fundraiser – Every 18 months or so the Alberta Government grants Morpheus Theatre a license to hold a casino as a fundraiser! These casinos bring in up to $70,000 or more for our use in putting on shows.  To make these casinos work we need to fill some 36-38 shifts – at roughly $2,000 per volunteer shift, this can be a great way to support Morpheus! If you would like to volunteer to be a BACK UP for shift or two, please sign up HERE!

April 7 – Wealth, Worth and Wallet – Financial Literacy for Performers with Ray Mordan – A comprehensive review of the personal finance basics including budgeting, credit card usage, investments types, identity protection and tax preparation. During the seminar participants will view these aspects from the perspective of the performing artist and will gain a working knowledge of how to maximize savings and reduce spending.

May 19 Intro to Director’s Process with Val Planche – Are you a director that wants to deepen your craft? Or an actor who has been dreaming of taking the leap into the role of director? Join Valerie Planche as she leads a workshop for beginners, practicing and experienced Directors that will explore the nuts and bolts of what goes into the storytelling process. From idea to production; what is required to create a dynamic story for the stage!

Masks and mask exercises will help train feeling rather than thinking, instinct over planning and reacting instead of the on-going chore of acting.

Morpheus Theatre is seeking experienced and passionate DIRECTORS for our 2019/2020 season!  Details HERE

Applicants are asked to submit a letter of interest and a resume with related theatre experience/background to info@morpheustheatre.ca. Applicants do not need to submit for a specific show.


We also invite the community to make proposals for SHOWS to be produced during our 2019/2020 season.

We are looking for WELL-KNOWN SHOWS with HIGH AUDIENCE POTENTIAL that fall within our four show categories.  Ideally, the shows will appeal to a wide family audience (primarily 12 and up, although under 18 is not the target audience).

Princess Ida Looking for Production Team Members!

Be a Part of Morpheus History!

This is the first time Morpheus Theatre has done Princess Ida – in fact it’s the first production of Princess Ida in Calgary!

We are looking for the following team members!
Stage Manager
Assistant Stage Manager
Rehearsal/Performance Accompanist
Props Master/Mistress
 
Rehearsals begin January 26 and are held regularly on Monday & Wednesday evenings, and Saturday afternoon. The show opens April 26th and closing May 11, in the Victor Mitchell Theatre at the Pumphouse Theatre.
